I bought an iPhone 11 Pro Max from John Lewis in the UK as I get a 5% discount. Looking at the camera under a bright light when I was cleaning it, I can see a tiny spec of dust (photo attached). I asked at my local Apple Store for a second opinion and they were able to verify that the dust was there and that if I was unhappy about it, I should take it into the John Lewis store and see if I could get a retail replacement.
One of the questions they asked me was if it was affecting any photos. I don't think it is, but I can't be certain. It's the telephoto lens, so if I try and take a photo of a sheet of paper, most of the time it switches to the wide angle. Is there a better way of testing it? There is no blue sky anywhere in the UK in December, so that's out.
My thoughts are; everything else about the phone is bang on perfect. If I get a retail replacement, there could be more dust. Or a bad screen, or something else.
Going by the photo, is the dust out of shot of the camera?
And yes, I know the camera area is covered in dust - it is usually a lot cleaner!
I have AppleCare+ and could end up using it at some point, so it might wind up getting switched out, in which case this is a waste of time. But at the moment I would prefer a retail unit as it's less than a month old.
Basically, lesson learnt is only buy things like this direct from Apple. The 14 day non-quibble is something you can't get anywhere else.
