I work for a defense contractor and they don't allow camera phones. Would you guys sneak your iPhone into work because you pay soo much for the monthly service cost?
Years ago, I worked in a very sensitive area.

If you had any unauthorized electronic equipment, the government would confiscate it on the spot and you faced disciplinary action. It did not matter how much the electronic device cost you, it became government property.

I would suggest that you do not risk loosing your job over something as simple as a cell phone.

Cant you get a case that covers the camera?

No, if you work in a classified location you usually have to get your phone inspected by security and they will want proof that the camera is permanently disabled. Having the camera removed as suggested earlier works, destroying the lens works but is cruel to do to an iPhone, having a second phone without a camera works. If you really want to carry your iPhone around, then removing the camera is the best bet (and can be reversed when you change jobs or go to sell the iPhone). You also have to check security's policy on Wifi and BlueTooth. Where I worked had a policy that turning them off was enough, but other places may not be as accommodating.

Some places as you alluded to in your prior post, just take all electronic items from you before entry.

And if you forgot one, it's the government's property and you may loose your job and/or face disciplinary action.

I carry my iPhone around at work... Corporate phones are stock as it comes and don't have cameras on them... you're not suppose to carry around cell phones, but they're not that strict on the matter

you work for a DOD contractor and you're wondering if it's a good idea to try and beat security? Expect this reply from the unemployment office after you get fired and ask why you're being denied benefits -

"Under "reason for dismissal" they checked "other" and wrote in "treason."

op.........how did you obtain your clearance with your poor integrity shown in this thread. im curious

That's a little extreme. He just wants his favorite phone without him at work without the intent of taking pictures (I'm assuming.)

That's not the point; the restrictions of his job clearly state that he can't have a phone with a camera in the work place, regardless of the intent. The same applies if I want to have a cigarette while I'm a gas station attendant; sure I want my favorite smokes while pumping gas, but is it really a good idea?

Oh, and in case you missed it he works for a DOD contractor - makes a bit of a difference.

Hey,

I work for a defense contractor and they don't allow camera phones. Would you guys sneak your iPhone into work because you pay soo much for the monthly service cost?

Thanks

We're in a recession

Are you a moron why would you risk your job for something so trivial ?

Of course not - what a stupid question to ask in the first place! What's more, what on earth are you doing taking a 'phone into work? You're supposed to go to work - to work!

If you're having difficulty paying for your 'phone, you should have considered that before you bought it.

That's what I was thinking, anyone with a TS (assuming that's what it is) this shouldn't even cross their minds. At all of the facilities that I work at you're not allowed to have ANY transmitting devices. The only device they allow you to carry is a DoD appointed pager that can only receive pages.

make sure you remember this thread on you're next re-up poly OP :D

You could cover the camera part of the phone. Like you could get one of those iPod Touch 1G cases. That's what I'd do.

Then I'd take it off in the bathroom and take a picture of myself. :D

And I'm sure the people at the security counter would just say "Oh, he has a camera, but it's covered...he's good...let him in!".

go read this, http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124027491029837401.html

is it too hard to follow a simple rule? you are the main reason IT people like me have to implement network access control - diasble access to users' CD/DVD/USB drives, set up Citrix and cripple it so people don't do stupid stuff.

i have client's who spend $500-$600 on a Dell then pay me to lock it down so it's a dumb@$$ terminal client that's worth $5. just b/c some folks can't follow the rules. /rant

That articles isn't even related. Those were hackers you accessed the information remotely.

I would just like to say: What ever happen to trusting employees to do their job? My company has all these policies about no camera phones and software where so we can't use memory cards, dvd burners, etc. In the end it just lowers morale and productivity. Are people really going to risk getting fired for taking pictures of the office restroom or some guy sleeping on the job?

I can see locking s*** down in the interest of national defense but I don't work in that industry.

Get a Blackberry 8820 - it doesn't have a camera and it's on AT&T. It has everything a smart phone/Blackberry has except for the camera.

I've got a case like that on my daugther!

Just kidding, I don't have a daughter...but if I did...

That is the funniest thing I have read all day!! :D

I am surprised you are allowed any phone. At DoE contract facilities all phones are forbidden in any area that a classified discussion can occur.

We are not allowed to bring any electronic devices into our secure areas either. It is a big pain in the butt!

There's a place on the net that will take the cameras out of any cell phone(for the reason you stated), you should look into it if your not to worried about having a camera in you phone.

OP:

Just out of curiosity, if you work in such a security sensitive location, what exactly do you need a personal cellphone at work for anyway?

remove the camera if you want the iphone so badly.. I know people who are in

the army in certain units where there's sensitive information. People have iphones without camera's

like literally a gaping hole in the back

Hilarious.
