Can 16 inch mbp users share their experiences for me? ( buy or wait? )

I am fussy as, and it took three of them at purchase to choose the nicest build... But I love it. The keyboard is sweet, far superior to the Butterfly mess. The speakers are good for portable. There is a little ghosting but so what... Nothing is perfect.

Guys i am in to buying mbp 16 base model with i7 and 16 gb ram. In my country prices are very high and ı have to choose carefully or wait. What ı mean waiting is that some of my friends told me that this year 16 inch mbp going to have changes. I am not sure what kind of changes it will have, ı checked the site but cant figure out to big changes they mentioned. Just saw that it will have 1080 p webcam. I want to ask you some things before buying. If you have time to answer, it will be appreciated.

Have you ever faced any drastic problems on your 16 inch mbp?

Any keyboard or touch bar problems?

Some people mention about ghosting and freezing screen?

Cause we r mid in year, they ship mid 2020 products? I ask this cause some sites still sending 2019 products.

How is cooling? I use my laptop for only writing. And sometimes youtube. ( fade in, office etc..)

Before buying what things i should be careful about?

Some questions can be noob one but really i am not good on techs. Also if ı should wait please tell.

Regards

There are two schools of thought on this type of question. The first is, you can almost always get a better deal if you wait. Second is, there is always a better deal coming, so at some point you just have to jump-in and buy. I typically check this site: https://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook_Pro_16 prior to making a purchase. When I purchased my 16" MBP, it was listed as 'neutral,' and that was just under two-weeks ago, and now it says 'caution.' WWDC is just about 9 days away, and there are lots of rumors and speculation flying around. Nobody really knows what is going to be announced. MacBook Pros are expensive, long-term purchases. It is never a good feeling to spend that much, just to see it get replaced or discontinued shortly after purchase.

Even if Apple announces or even releases a new 16" MacBook Pro at WWDC (which is not expected), most folks seem to think it would be a minor spec-bump, upgrading to 10th Gen Intel CPUs (which are NOT the same as the 10th gen in the 13" and MBA), and will not make a huge difference. In my opinion, that would not be worth waiting, IF you need something now. If you don't have a pressing need and can wait, it certainly won't hurt to wait until after WWDC (which will be starting 22 June). They seem to update the 15/16" about once a year, which means that we are still about 3 months out for a refresh. I would not be surprised at all, if nothing is said at WWDC, and a refreshed model comes out in the Oct/Nov timeframe with the spec bump.

The current 16" MacBook Pro is a 2019 model (released in November 2019), the only 2020 models are the 13" MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air.

Also remember, coming to a place like this to see about problems folks are having, gives you an extremely biased viewpoint. Folks that are not having problems, don't tend to make posts, so all you here from are the folks with issues. The problems I have seen (and I wouldn't personally call them problems yet) with my 16" MBP, is that it can get hot to the touch, but so did my older 2015 MacBook Pro. The fan noise is also pretty much the same as my 2015 model, but it doesn't seem to turn on as much. The display is actually slower than some that I have used, but it is not nearly as bad (from my perspective and opinion) as some posts here state. Display performance is a personal experience, and the 16" MBP display works the way I expect it would. My desktop (which is for games) is faster, but I have no issues with the MPB. This is my first one with a TouchBar, and so far it hasn't given me any issues.

Good luck!

Overall, the 16" MBP is really good machine. It is an evolution of the previous generations so there aren't the teething problems associated with a new design. Most people will be satisfied with the performance and behaviors of the MBP. With that said I did have a couple issues that steered me in the direction of the 13" MBP. Here's my list:

  • Display brightness uniformity / viewing angles
    • I have a particular issue (OCD for sure) that variations in screen brightness caused by uneven display back-lighting and/or viewing angles drives me bananas. What I found on the MBP 16" is that the corners are dark when displaying a white background. I did several exhanges and never found one that did not exhibit this issue. Some were better than others, but all had this issue. No, I don't stare at a blank white screen all day, but I do a fair amount of viewing white screens (word, onenote, pdfs, browsers, etc) that my eyes are immediately drawn to the dark spots. Below you will find a couple of examples.

  • Display ghosting or smearing isn't a terrible problem for my use case, but it is present. Just scrolling through posts here at MacRumors I saw it. The text is white on a black background (dark mode). When slowly scrolling the white text turns blueish-gray. I've never noticed this on any other PC or Mac. 13" MBP does not exhibit this issue. Is it a big problem, no, but it's annoying for such an expensive device.
  • Fan noise wasn't a problem for me. Occasionally, I would notice the fans running, but overall the machine was quiet. I don't use an external monitor.
  • No real keyboard issues. I did have a couple machines where the touchpad and palmrest heights were an issue. On one or more sides the two (touchpad and palmrest) were the exact same height. Doesn't sound like a big problem, but a little bit of a defining edge provides feedback when you have reached the edge of the touchpad.

Are you my long lost brother? My wife thinks I’m crazy.. I’ve lost count of the times I said “babe, do you think the right side of the screen is darker or bluer than the left?” Lol. I’m a uniformity stickler too, sometimes I wish I had the blissful ignorance of some people that buy these machines without looking twice and are uneducated in serious hardware defects. It’s why Apple doesn’t resolve it.

I’ve been through a fair share of 16” recently, more than I’m willing to admit. The one I have now is nearly perfect on all accounts - blb, no dead pixels etc.. there were uniformity problems I think I was tricking myself to see but after investing into an irite display pro I ran a uniformity test and it’s as good as it’s going to get on white/gray/dark gray

it also checks variation in color temps

mall they research and now I’m nervous like OP about the 16 seeing a significant upgrade this year. Too big of an investment to have it out of date within a few months but I doubt whatever is newer is really going to be a huge difference

I just got a refurbished 2.4 GHz i9, 32GB, 1TB, 5300M 16" and I love it. I've only had it since Sunday and I got a panic attack the day of. But after installing the most recent update I have not gotten another one. I'm using it while docked (clamshell mode) attached to two 4K monitors. To keep it quiet, I disable turbo boost (Turbo Boost Switcher Pro) when I don't need the extra power (e.g., not compiling or doing anything that needs the extra power). The original expected delivery date was suppose to be today (Wednesday) which would have allowed me to return it after WWDC event but now I won't be able to. I got it to replace my late 2015 5K iMac / 2018 13" MBP setup and it's so much faster and I love the keyboard. Since I bought it refurbished, I decided to keep it (due to the $500+ in savings). Even when the new (if they're updating them this June) are released, it'll probably be a couple of months (2-3) until they hit Apple's refurbished store.

technically you can return it after WWDC. initiate the return within 14 days then you have a further 14 days to send it back. If you don’t send it back then everything carries on as normal

This is true and I would bet there is no update given the recent update of the 13".
