can 2 macbooks connect wirelessly?

Just curious to see of two macbooks can connect wirelessly for file transfers and such (without a router)

Yes. One MacBook can create a wireless network with its Airport card and the other can join said network.

hmm... any pointers on how to do this?

From the finder, click on Help. Type in "create network". The 3rd option will give detailed instructions on how to accomplish this.
