While in the no hassle return window, can a refurb be returned to an Apple Store, or does the buyer have to ship it back at their expense?

Usually the item has to be returned to the store it was bought from, i.e. to the online store in this case. You can always try though, I've heard plenty of cases where people have been able to return refurbs to retail stores.

if you bought online, you HAVE to return it to the online store, as it is a totally "different entity". I asked that when I ordered my MBP from the clearance store online.

No harm done in asking though.

You can try, but since yours is refurbished, I put the odds at less than 10%. I've had a store exchange a new online purchase for a better one, but since stores do not carry refurbished items, I think the manager's options might be nada.
