Not a developer, and my google-fu has failed me on this one. Is there any mechanism for a non-Apple iOS app to see if there are unread iMessages/SMSs and missed phone calls? Not talking about content or metadata or anything like that - just whether or not there are any missed messages.

To my knowledge there is no public API for that for iMessage or any Apple developed messaging service, including the SMS system. Private APIs are for use by Apple only and using one will get you rejected from the App Store.
GMail, Line, and other messaging services can choose to have such an API open, and the two mentioned do.

Thanks. I figured that was probably the case but couldn't find a yea or nay either way.
