Friend of mine at work complained on her Facebook that her "stupid iPhone" screen broke. She just got the 4S maybe 3 weeks or so ago. Verizon wouldn't replace it even though she had insurance on it and ended up paying the $160 fee or whatever.

Anyway it's cracked at the bottom right and she says she woke up and the screen was cracked. I've never heard of glass randomly cracking unless under certain conditions (really cold and then hot, etc...).

I don't think she's lying, I told her I'm not the Apple Police but she swears she woke up to it broken. I'm guessing she karate chopped it while she was sleeping somehow.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Yes it can if the glass was imperfect especially whilst charging!

Oh wow I forgot about that. I just asked her and she said it was charging overnight.

She should deal directly with Apple, not Verizon. Apple should be able to tell if it's a crack that is non-impact related. If they can see that the device has no other damage (like from being dropped, for example) than that's a defect in materials and should be eligible for a free warranty replacement.

Yes. By definition, "random" cracks can happen at any time... aka "randomly."

Sure, it broke on its own:rolleyes:

Hey no need to be sarcastic lol it DOES randomly happen.

I woke up one morning to a cracked back on my phone. Now this was the back and not the front, but the battery in my phone had been defected and that night it had swollen so largely in the phone that it bowed the back glass so much that it cracked it. I didnt notice till I picked up the phone to use it that morning and the skin I had on it at the time was holding it all in place. But I felt the crackling when my fingers moved across it. Sucks, but it may happen.

Now seeings how this is the front and again not the back, the chances of it randomly cracking is like what they mentioned above ^^^ "random" lol

Random Crack

I would believe it, I actually found this forum because it happened to me last night. Put my phone on the charger went to bed woke up and there was a small crack under the home button. I am actually curious what ended up happening with this. Unfortunately I recently moved 200 miles from the closest Apple store so I won't be able to show this to a genius in person, I will just have to take my chances describing it to some one over the phone and hope that they are willing to listen to me.

Update

So just as an update I received my iPhone replacement today it was repaired at no cost. So not sure if there was an issue discovered of if they were just being nice but I am a happy camper.

Am not sure about Apple glass and the material of which it is made, but I am witnessed the normal glasses breaking by their own because of the material expiry and usage over a long time.
e.g once in a water glass, the base of the glass broke down from glass walls without anyone touching it!

I had this same issue happen this morning!! I woke up and saw the crack on the top left of my phone... under the glass and no other damage. What did you say to them on the phone? I am thinking that I will have to visit the Apple Store this weekend. Just wondering what to expect.

Yes! I was in class today and my friend was sitting beside me, we were not moving, just sitting there and all of a sudden we heard This faint cracking noise and we looked at each other and he pulled out his iPhone from his pocket and the screen at the top had a huge crack in it... Just out of no where

So you say he had the phone in his really tight pants whilst sitting. And then all of a sudden it cracked?
