THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

see i've looked into getting AT&T here... but it's a crappy deal and more expensive all around. the service is poor where we live. so there's no way in heck i would switch.

knowing that we'd still be able to use EDGE helps. i know it's slower, but it's worth not having to deal with AT&T. As long as we can still use all the other capabilities/features, i'll be happy.

i realize that we would have to wait till after July 11th to make sure that the ZiPhone software works with the new iPhones. if it does, you bet i will be purchasing 2 new iPhones, along with the MobileMe family pack.
You realize that your cost will be $199 + $36 activation + $70 first month service + 175 ETF = $480 or so per iPhone? And as noted above you will not get an iPhone without signing a two year deal with AT&T, so you will be paying an ETF for each phone. And unless GPS is critical for you the 3G doesn't really offer much over the 2G for you.

If you really want an iPhone on TMobile, buying a 2G on eBay or Craigslist makes much more sense. Or even buy one of the few remaining 2Gs that are still available in AT&T stores.

Exactly what I said. I can try it in Greek too if that helps.... :)

Well we don't know yet if AT&T will be selling an unsubsidized version to anybody but they are going to have to sell one to people who are on an AT&T contract but not eligible for an upgrade so there might be a chance of getting one at full price to use on T-Mobile without all the hassle. I don't see why Apple would really care anymore if they aren't getting any payback from the contracts.

You'd have to pay for two months of phone service for each device. If you try to cancel in the first 30 days, you have to return the device. So that would throw you into the second month of service before you could cancel and keep the phone.

PLEASE READ THIS POST, I'm being helpful not a bitch
If you want to be even more helpful, you might consider editing your post to specifically state that "nobody knows if what I just said will apply to the iPhone 3G". That way people unfamiliar with how the unlock process works won't be under the understanding that they simply need to run something called "ZiPhone" on their iPhone 3G and they'll be all set.

if you buy an iPhone 3G, it will not work at 3G speeds on T-Mobile's network, but will continue to use EDGE. This is because T-Mobile uses a different frequency than AT&T, and Apple has disabled this on the iPhone 3G, presumably to cut down on unlocking the iPhone.
Wait, what?! The iPhone 3G chipset does support T-Mobile US' weird 3G frequencies, but Apple has disabled it? I hadn't heard that before. Do you have any links with info about that?

holy balls read the 10,000 other posts about iPhone and Tmobile.

Yup, there is a lot of info out there but arguably the biggest concern right now is that the NEW iPhones will have to be activated with AT&T. They are no longer selling them and letting people walk out of the stores without a valid AT&T plan. I heard they are giving customers a short time period to sign up but after that will be charged a hefty fee for not signing up.

So...buy a first generation iPhone THEN follow the all the existing solutions for using it with T-Mobile.

That is exactly what I , uh, I mean a kid down the block is planning to do.
:D

It's also bad advice instructing ZiPhone use to someone who has no idea what they are doing.

Then you just get a second post saying, how do I use ZiPhone, followed by "After I used ZiPhone my phone wont turn on"

And the cycle continues.

Long story short, you want an iPhone with Tmobile and know nothing about hacking or how they work etc. Get a current already unlocked one from eBay. You want the latest and greatest iPhone and you know nothing about hacking and the workings of the phone, etc, wait until July 11th and sign up for ATT.

No, the phone just doesn't have the 1700MHz band at all. Nothing disabled about it.

Anybody complaining about AT&T coverage and then claiming T-Mobile is better knows nothing.
I can understand arguing Verizon has better coverage in your area, but there are very few, if any, areas where T-Mobile or Sprint truly have better coverage than ATT or VZW.

Especially Chicago. Chicago has great AT&T coverage.

Do you live in Chicago? If not, you have absolutely no grounds to even comment on it.

I put up with AT&T's ****** service for 7 months before I gave up.

I'm so ****ing tired of reading people's claims of how great AT&T's service in Chicago is. IT SUCKS, PLAIN AND SIMPLE. And I can comment because 1) I live here, 2) had the service before I had the iPhone and after I had the iPhone and 3) I had three different iPhones that I tried before giving up on AT&T.

Give it a rest people. AT&T is no good in Chicago. Their coverage maps are inaccurate.

Wow,
Such negativity from some MR people:cool:. It's a forum for a reason, So you can ASK questions even if they have been asked before. If you are so upset that someone has posted yet another will it work on t-mobile question, Just don't answer it and it will sink to the bottom of the que. No need to call people names. There is simply no need.

As for unlocking the iphone. I would recommend iclarified.com they have lots of good info for unlocking the iphone with apps besides ziphone. They give a good pro/con for each unlocking software.

Good luck.

Many Fanboys will be selling their "old" Iphones on eBay as soon as they have bought the 3G on the 11th of july. I would suggest you to buy two well maintained unscuffed 1st generation iPhones and use ZiPhone with them. You will be much cheaper off and you know that Jailbraking (ZiPhone) will work.

EDIT: Wow!!! One minute of typing and 10 posts further with the same content. Damn we are becoming helpful :)
