Reference to the movie maybe? The Thin Red Line?

Crimean War. Referred to a specific British unit, badly outnumbered, that held their line. That is way too simple, but it's the origin. Since then it's be picked up as a more general term, and then the Hollywood made a movie, called the The Thin Red Line - and now most people think it's about Iwo Jima.
