There was a time in the 1980s when wearing jeans with a zip fly meant one of the following:-

  • You had no idea how to dress
  • You were prepared for people to laugh at you
  • Your mum bought your clothes

Then there is the issue of the guy walking into the Thrift Store and finding the old retro mens jeans with the fly in the back.

Avoid those.

"we got a bleeder!!!"

I'll take button-fly over zipper any day. Nice premium vintage style jeans usually only come with button-fly, and they enhance the overall look of the jeans... and make your junk look bigger :)

I can't remember the last time I used a zipper, except with formal wear.

All Levi shrink to fit 501s come with buttons. The buttons are metal and are riveted on, not sewn on. They've been making them that way for something like 100 years. The shrink to fit 501s are designed to be "strong as hell" and they pretty much are.

Can't disagree with that. Had these for about 4 years now and they pretty much are indestructable.

Ouch is about right, when i done it i thought i might have to pay the local hospital a visit i couldn't get it free, that would have been embarrassing drunk & my ***** caught in my zip ( I'm not jewish by the way ) button jeans rock

Jews have it soooo easy :D

...I've always been careful to make doubly sure since then. Funny how one bad experience makes you double check for the rest of your life. Once burned, twice shy, as the saying goes.

buttons are way superior. ;)
they are quicker and easier to open, don't cause 'accidents' and don't brake or unzip. and are way cooler.

but seriously, if you have problems using buttons pants, using button pants is the least of your problems...

Firstly, I do not disagree that buttons may have a higher build quality than a zipper, but...

How can undoing five buttons possibly be faster than zipping down a zipper? And there can not possibly be any argument for the reverse action (buttoning back up vs. zipping up).

I don't notice any speed or safety benefits of using either button or zipper because I don't have a problem operating either one. I've also never broken a zipper or button on a pair of jeans, so strength isn't an issue.

come one guys, its that magically feeling you get when you REALLY have to take a piss and your only 8, no wait, 7 buttons away from not pissing youself:p

I only do up 2-3 of the buttons.

The thing is, you really only undo one button, and the rest come along as a matter of simple physics. ;) :p

Seriously though, I can definitely undo a button fly faster than a zipper fly so I know it's possible. :)

501's are for amateurs. We had 13-button drop-front bell bottoms in Uncle Sugar's Canoe Club™ (plus another couple on a yoke behind the flap), took a real pro to hold a beer and get them undone at the same time.

I finally just did them together with Velcro, for those Ron Jeremy moments in life...

Why on earth would anyone like this? It make it so much more difficult to just ... do certain business. A zipper is much more efficient. Everything else about this pair of pants I like, but a button fly? Are you kidding me? Forget it.

Don't be lazy. Soon you'll be questioning the need for a belt and will wear those jeans with the elastic waist, or "mom jeans".
