So here's the story...

I've got my old iPhone 3G sitting here next to me, it having not been used since I got my 4. As per usual, my standard SIM card was replaced with a micro SIM when I got my iPhone 4. Now, my goal is to unlock the iPhone 3G to give to my girlfriend who is on another carrier (somehow) not eligible for an upgrade. So here's the big question, can I unlock my phone when it is stuck in DFU mode (not by me) with no SIM in it? I haven't dabbled into any hacking since I got my 4 because I mainly just jailbroke for customization purposes so I'm definitely out of practice with all of the new (within the last year) methods. Any help would be awesome!

TLDR - Can an iPhone 3G be unlocked with no SIM?

Yes, to unlock the iphone. You don't need to have sim in it. The original sim is just convenience for you to activate the phone when you restore it. Without it, you still can jailbreak it from activation screen, then depending on your phone baseband, install ultrasn0w to unlock it.
