I'm not a fan of Spark, before I stopped using it, I questioned why overnight it was active 100% of the time, even though nothing (push etc) was enabled. Support were unable to give me a straight answer, I hit that X and confirmed so quickly I don't think the confirmation dialog had time to render on screen.

Same for me, I had 100% background usage from Spark for months and talking back and forth with support. They were never able to solve it.

I ended up using Airmail, as that had support for iCloud alises, which is what I needed from Spark. I do use the native Mail.app for my main email though and am fine with that.

This is a very obvious problem with 1 or more E-Mails or dragged files in your Mail Account and not an Apple Problem.
I would search for the image files in the E-Mail Program.

If it isn't an Apple problem, why has it never happened in 14 years, since the iPhone 4 in 2010.
Every single iOS release has been fine, until the release of iOS18?

Not sure what you meant by:

For anyone that's interested, 18.2 didn't address this problem. Not in the least bit surprised.

I've tried out Spark for a few weeks.
Now that I've made the jump to 18.2, I put my IMAP accounts on Spark and my POP3 accounts on Apple Mail.
Both seem to work fine.
When I first got on iOS 18.2, I had three POP3 and two IMAP emails under Mail, and while the emails fetched OK (every 15 minutes), I wasn't getting any Notification sound but only the banners.
From all the reading I did, it seemed like iOS 18 didn't get along with Gmail and its protocols. So, I just migrated my Yahoo and Gmail IMAP accounts to Spark while leaving the POP3 on Mail, and now both Spark and Mail are seemingly happy.

Is´nt the downloading slowing the opening likely as you posted this image ?

I had never a single Problem with Apple Mail in decades beside using GMX on iOS which is not able to set E-Mail Status correct but this is GMX fault, and btw. who is using POP3 nowadays ?

I have 10 E-Mail Accounts 1 Exchange and 9 IMAP. Masses of Mails.

Literally no.
This downloading appears for ages, you can force close and go back to it 4 or 5 times and still shows 'downloading'
Eventually they appear but there are still some missing. This happens even if it's one image. And the downloading image attachments in email only works when they've all downloaded.
Like I've said before, this never happened until 18 regardless that you and others never have a problem. Many others do, I've seen plenty of moans on web searches but no solutions. This downloading wait can also apply to text only emails too where they just appear blank while you wait minutes for the loading.
I don't use POP only IMAP. Plus the added problem of sending from iPad or iPhone and randomly doesn't show the sent item on Mac or phone or iPad.
Again... only since iOS18

Have you updated to 18.2 ?
I had and have no Problems and am on 18.2 now.

Hi All,
After much frustration, this problem was resolved for me by adding a / (forward slash) in the IMAP Path Prefix field.

The Path Prefix field can be found under Settings>Apps>Mail>Mail Accounts>[your IMAP account]>Account Settings>Advanced ... then in the Incoming Settings section you will find IMAP Path Prefix (it may have a slightly grey / after it. Type / and the / will turn white. Then back out of that menu and press Done. Close settings and your mail app. Open your mail app and see if it now works.

Note: some people add INBOX to the path prefix, but at least in my case this prevented the other folders from syncing as they are in the root of the IMPA server.

Hope it works for others - this was SO frustrating!

Cheers!

Apple Support has informed:

that they are aware of the problems with the iOS Mail apps under OS 18.
The problems are NOT confined to just external IMAP email accounts but affect Apple email accounts (eg _____@icloud.com) as well.
Deleting the Mail app and reinstalling is NOT expected to fix the problems, and doing that is at this point in time NOT recommended by Apple as a possible fix.
The problems seem to also extend to issues with mail accounts not being able to properly sync between devices as well.

Deleting individual email accounts and re-entering them etc. may OR MAY NOT result in a “permanent” or even temporary fix.

So it looks like we’ll have to wait until Apple sorts it all out and issues one or more updates. FYI it looks like mail is working reasonably well on my iPad running iPad OS 18 but mail on my iPhone running iPhone OS 18 is a bit of a disaster.

Yeh, done all the 18 updates, and tried the forward slash too, It deleted every folder, other than the Inbox.
So there was no sent or anything else folder afterwards. Also deleted and reinstalled. I wonder if they are aware of all the problems, the downloading as well as the synching. We shall see. Thanks for the response.
