Can Anyone recommend and card reader I have purchased 2 from Amazon and returned them as they were not compatible .

Need more information. What model/year MacBook Air? What kind of card are you trying to read? How are you connecting the card reader to the MacBook?

I only bought my MacBook air in 2017 it has 2 USB ports

Okay so its a type A machine. Any standard USB SD card reader should work with that machine. Here are three suggestions.
