Unfortunately what you describe isn't at all easy - all you can really do is what you've already tried, which will never be perfect because it assumes that vocals are mixed perfectly to the centre with all other instruments mixed into the left and right, which usually isn't the case.

You'll get something usable, as you've found, but not something perfect.

Really you just need an instrumental as it was originally created.

If all that is left is a "slight singing in the background" you have already done about as best as possible.

To do any better you'd have to buy the sheet music and make you own recording. That is not impossible using Apple's Logic and MIDI
