A friend in the UK who's just bought an iPhone says that it updated to the latest software without him having to do anything. Can Apple actually force an iPhone to update against the user's will? Or is it like the iPod, in that you can choose whether to manage it manually or automatically?

I've been tempted to get one and hack it to work with my local provider, but I won't bother if I can't avoid it being bricked by future software updates.

    UK iPhone's came preloaded w/ 1.1.2

hence why that is the latest update for us over here in the US... The main chunk of this update was for international support :p ; therefore iPhones overseas would not come w/ any earlier firmware versions ;) , and since 1.1.2 is indeed the LATEST firmware out there, they could not possible 'auto' update to anything newer even if that was possible w/o user input :D
