sure, just click your wifi icon and click create network, then have the tv join that network.

    Is it fairly fast?

Right now I'm using a Belkin N150 and have all sorts of connection issues.

I'm also wondering if a simple airport express do the trick.

That Belkin is a lower end model so the performance might not be as good as the higher products in the model line. The best connection is with an ethernet cable to each connected device. Those connections are much more reliable and higher performing. I tend to use wi-fi only where its impractical to run ethernet and\or my main interest is portability. With a device like an ATV that tends to stay put at the TV I just ran one ethernet cable there. Then I've got a network 5-port network switch with cables running to my Bluray player, ATV and Satellite receiver. All of them need internet connectivity and thats the best way to provide high performance, reliable and cheap connections.

Yes. I use airport express to connect the atv to my iMac with no problems.
