Can Apple TV Update Firmware while Playing?

Last night something weird happened. The Apple TV light intermittently blacked out, and then started to blink. Sometimes a TV show would play, sometimes the screen would go blank (and I'd lose remote control). I do have auto update on. Anyway this lasted about half an hour.
 
nope, it will boot to a logo screen with a progress bar, and is fully unusable when uploading, and it's pretty obvious about what it's doing.

Thanks! It hasn't happened again. Maybe it was my buddies at Mediacom 😉 But I did check the the network with the Airport app.
