This will be my first time needing to backup on a mac. Can I just plug in my external drive and drag and drop "Mac HD" there?

My vote is for SuperDuper. They're probably the best of what's available considering cost, utility value, and ease of use. Look at both and make your pick. Either way you won't go wrong.
or get Leopard & use Time Machine
If I had to guess, he's probably needing to backup for the upgrade to Leopard. This is only judging on the context of the OP's question.
You could also just drag some things over to the external, if you aren't too worried about things being perfect.
