Activesync provides push synchronization of contacts, calendars, tasks, and email between ActiveSync-enabled servers and devices. Also provides for the manual transfer of files to a mobile device, along with limited backup/restore functionality, and the ability to install and uninstall mobile device applications.
So that is the only info your companies host server will be able to get from his device.
Not his actual safari browsing currently on carrier connection.
Good try though making it sound like you can track him and see everything like enemy of the state:D

If you read the post more clearly before talking about something you clearly don't understand you would have noticed that i said as soon as the connection to our server is made our anti-virus program Sophos is automatically installed on the device.

Without this being installed the phone cannot reach the email server. Due to the nature of our work our employees are made aware of this. They are also made aware of the fact that Sophos filters their internet traffic. Just like a desktop computer, or their laptop that they bring on the road for work. Anything that can access our exchange server is automatically given sophos.

If you read the posters thread clearly you will not find anything about Activesync or Sophos that you're talking about.
And even in your case I highly doubt the activesync server is keeping track or logging his safari web surfing usage.

I have my own iPhone (not owned by the company I work for in any way) and wanted to know if my employer can track my usage while browsing the web on my personal 3G connection. I know that it using the company wi-fi on any device is fair game, but what about my personal 3G connection when not connected to their wi-fi?

Not that I'm doing anything wrong/illegal, I just like to take breaks from time to time and browse the web on company time and wanted to know if I could do so in privacy :)

Thanks for any help.

If you take a break from time to time and browse the web then you're not on company time, right? :p

I think if you work in secure areas for the government then sometimes you're not even allowed to have your phone on. So I hear.
