No. There are no $20 a month go phone data plans. I activated a gophone with 200 minutes plus 200 SMS. I took the sim out and placed it in an iPhone that is unlocked. Just don't use any data. The biggest gophon data plan is 100MB and you can go through that in no time with the iPhone, so just don't use data.

OK. Thanks...with WiFi that might be enough for me :)

Pay as you go is too expensive. I wan't to add it to my family plan. I can unlock, but I don't want to go to tMobile or payGo. I guess I am just screwed.

unlock the iphone and add another line by getting a free phone or another phone to sell at the subsidized price. this way you get something for signing the two year contract.

When you unlock the phone, make sure you install SBSettings so you can turn data off when you are home or put it in airplane mode. The iPhone used data sometimes and it will use edge once in a while and you will get charged even if it is on WiFi. This is why you need something to shut off data when you are home.

So I must hacktivate it with Pwnage tool? I wan't to add it to my family plan though. AFAIK you can't add a Gophone to a familytalk plan.

That is correct. As other have said, remember to add the data plan, or if you dont want data to be used on it, make sure to tell AT&T to block all incoming data before you hacktivate the iPhone.

I should be able to go into an at&t store, and tell them I want to add a line to my family plan. They should then give me a sim card, and a new number.

I put the sim into said iphone 2G, then commence to hacktivating with pwnage tool, right?

Yes You Can!!!

You can activate your 2g iphone on a family plan without having a contract with it. You wont have a contract because you didnt have to pay the 2yr discounted price of the phone. Therefore you dont get the subsidized price of the phone and can activate a new line with a month to month plan. You just need to have the $20 data plan on it. I know this can be done because i work for att and have done tons of them. You just need to get someone who knows how to do it.

I'm confused....

If you add a new line on your family plan, That will lock it into a contract, I'm fairly certain....

yes, it's very ef'd up. I won't even go in to the "explanation" the AT&T rep gave me because it's too absurd.

You're right that you go month to month after your contract is up as long as you stay on that phone. But if you deactivate that phone, switch to something new, and try to reactivate that phone (family plan or otherwise), they will make you sign a new 2 year contract.

But wait, it gets worse. They treat you as if you had gotten a subsidy when you reactivated that older phone. So in my case, if I added my gf with my old 2G iphone and it died in 6 months they would say she was not eligible for a subsidized new phone ("upgrade") despite never having gotten a subsidy at any point.

Freakin' ridiculous.
wow..just WOW. I like at&t, but that is a f'en JOKE!!!

What's wrong with a contract? My question is do you have to pay to swap out your phone to the iPhone 2g

If you plan on using the phone through at&t you don't even need to unlock it. Jailbreak the phone (which activates the phone), then drop in any working at&t sim and the phone will make calls. It's not that big of a deal. Then call at&t and have them add a data plan whatever number you are going to use the phone with.

That's what I did for my girlfriend and it worked just fine.

I just got out of the at&t store. The employee said I cannot just add a line of service to my account without signing a new 2 year agreement, regardless if I had a Nokia, Motorola, or any other phone for that matter. I said what about the no commitment pricing? She said even if you buy the phone outright then you still need to sign a 2 year contract, and pay the ETF of 175.00 if I end early.

This is BullS^*T. I can just jailbreak, and hacktivate on tmobile without a contract. I think the employee just didn't know what she was doing.

She is either outright lying in order to get a bigger commission, or else she is misinformed.

With no-commitment pricing, there is explicitly no requirement to commit to any term contract when you activate the phone - you can go directly into month-to-month service.

The brain dead AT&T employee actually thinks "No Commitment Pricing", actually means "Commitment Required". Its a No commitment/ commitment!

Sorry but the AT&T employee is correct. The service commitment is related to two things, the price you pay (subsidy) and the voice rate plan you chose.

Some promotional (special) rate plans require a service commitment. In the case of the FamilyTalk rate plan the official AT&T MyCSP response is that all lines on a FamilyTalk rate plan require up to a two-year service commitment. Now, having said that some RSCs will allow you to add a line without requiring you to agree to the two-year service commitment.

Ah! I wasn't considering the possibility that the rate plan in question was a promotional offer. Thanks for pointing that out, it makes perfect sense.

Reviving a year old thread as it still applies to a situation I am now facing

How is this even LEGAL? This is so effed up

After 2 years, ATT should be required to unlock or at least let one USE the phone as an ipod without the need of an active sim card

WTF

Long story short they default to putting you into a 2 year contract, but since you brought your own phone, you CAN get them to not put you into a contract or have them reverse the contract if you found out too late.

So to be clear, if I give an old iPhone that has completed its contract, I can give it to someone and they will be able to go month to month

Or is this false?
