do macbooks keep track of their usage history? like if i can check when was it last turned on? many thanks

Not specifically "usage", but you can tell when it's booted or woken up by looking at the system.log (Console app).

How does one go about setting it up so a password is required.

Assume I know nothing.

Thanks in advance!

System Preferences>Accounts>Select your account>Change Password/ Add Password>Type it in
Then in Accounts>Unlock the lock at the bottom>Disable Automatic Login

Yep that is usually the best way to go.

I tend to have it so my username does not show up in the list so I have to type it out each time I want to log in.
