My system 1 log is 5 gb! Can I delete that and it will replace itself with a clean folder or is there something the computer needs in there?

Logs are good for troubleshooting and documentation more then anything else. You're safe deleting that runaway log. OS X will just pick up where the last one left off.

Use the Console.app to remove these logs. It may cause problems if you do it manually.

Actually, system.log.1 is already a backed up file -- system.log is the active log. So (1) it doesn't matter what method you use to delete it (because the system is not currently logging to it) and (2) when you delete it, the system will continue to log to the log file it is using, i.e. system.log ... but it does sometimes happen that the current log file has gotten out of hand, so this is still good advice. 🙂

I wonder why it isn't noting itself as compressed.

Thanks! 🙂 Will the "clear display" button erase the log?

I just set this HD up 3 days ago from a clean install.

Console locked up on me for some reason so I just revealed it in finder and drug it out, then emptied the trash. I'm re-running Whatsize.app to see if it is really gone.

Yeah, that's odd too. I thought they automatically compress when they rotate now. Particularly at 5GB, one would hope. The 5GB file will probably be about 60kb when compressed. 😀

It sounds like Console.app froze while trying to move it to trash. I was going to suggest that it could be done via Finder as well.

It all went smooth. Crazy how much log files I generated over 2 days of building this new HD. I went from an 80g to a 160g so I could finally load all my loops and fonts and brushes (all the jam packs, 6,000 fonts, 936 CS3 brushes, 459 final cut plug ins, etc........) I think it took 60 gig to load all that up and it was generating tons of log files on font book as it added fonts in. That was like 900 lines or better in the log file. I had 130 apps to load including the Master Collection Suite so that's 15 huge Adobe programs generating tons of install logs and prefs (my prefs folder is 4gb!).

Looks like if you plan on building a Mac with a lot of add ons, you might wanna check that install log for excessive bloat. FYI.
