Logs are good for troubleshooting and documentation more then anything else. You're safe deleting that runaway log. OS X will just pick up where the last one left off.
I wonder why it isn't noting itself as compressed.Actually, system.log.1 is already a backed up file -- system.log is the active log. So (1) it doesn't matter what method you use to delete it (because the system is not currently logging to it) and (2) when you delete it, the system will continue to log to the log file it is using, i.e. system.log ... but it does sometimes happen that the current log file has gotten out of hand, so this is still good advice. 🙂
You'll want to move it to Trash. Thanks! 🙂 Will the "clear display" button erase the log?
I just set this HD up 3 days ago from a clean install.

It sounds like Console.app froze while trying to move it to trash. I was going to suggest that it could be done via Finder as well.Console locked up on me for some reason so I just revealed it in finder and drug it out, then emptied the trash. I'm re-running Whatsize.app to see if it is really gone.

My system 1 log is 5 gb! Can I delete that and it will replace itself with a clean folder or is there something the computer needs in there?
It's WhatSize. I prefer Disk Inventory X though. What application are you using to view your folders and folder sizes?
