It's designed for 15" laptops but I figure it will work.

Specifically thinking about a 16" intel Mac but might want it to fit an M1 Mac too for future use.

I don't know if that will fit but, If this is for school, make sure to not put books etc. in with the Mac, as that can potentially cause problems for your Mac. If the Mac is going to be the main item in said backpack, I would look for something that much better protection (read: padding) for the Mac and doesn't allow the Mac to slide around.

Thanks – it's not for school, but that's a fair point regardless. Is there anything affordable you recommend?

I use Tomtoc for my iPad Pro and it offers excellent protection. I think the following would be good coverage for your Mac.

Thanks, that looks like a nice case.

This is actually intended primarily as a gift for someone who has a 16" or maybe even 15" MacBook Pro but I imagine might upgrade to an M1 at some point. So the laptop case aspect is secondary and the backpack aspect primary. Maybe I'll get it and let him return it if he doesn't like it.

The tote bag might be a better choice than the backpack.
But I'm thinking that many cases designed for a 15" MacBook Pro are going to be "on the tight side" for the 16" model. I could be wrong...
