Can I get free MobileMe on I4 without 4.2?

My iPhone 4 is still running on 4.0.1 and I was wondering - is there anyway I can get the free mobileme running without upgrading?

I want MM but don't see any point in upgrading until a stable untethered JB is released.

According to this, you can get it to work on a 3GS, provided you have a 4.2 device to initiate it. I tried it with a up-to-date iPad and 4.1 on an iPhone 4 and it didn't work, but you could sure give it a try.

Can we have findmyiphone on 4.x i4 if the account has been activated on a legit 4.2.1 i4 ?

Also insterested in that because i have no intention to update to 4.2.1 since its a complete bust.

No, you need 4.2.1 installed.

you need 4.2 on the device to get FindMyiPhone for free, you can't in a lower version since you are not using a normal mobileme username but the one you use from iTunes...

Yes you can. Save your shsh blobs...upgrade to 4.2.1...sign up for find my iPhone...downgrade back to your original ios version, and you're good to go. I have 4.1 installed, and find my iPhone works great.
