Anybody else read this as, "Can I give my wife a really obscene name?" :D

I initially thought thats what the thread title was.

There is no way you could get into trouble but frankly you reap what you sow when you decide to personally insult your neighbors or tattle on them. In that respect I say grow up. I'm sure the guy in 28 who needs to stop eating and the purported drug dealers in 30 would be more than happy to show you what passive aggressive behavior such as yours gets in return. If I were you I'd choose something funny because having the cops come get you would be the least of your worries.

Agreed. Name it something funny rather than trying to insult your neighbors.

I get a list of about fifteen different wifis which means that about fifteen other people can also see my wifi.

Now I've realised that, I have this sudden urge to change my network name to something really descriptive and disgusting. Or even something like "The guy at no 30 is clearly a drug dealer" or "The guy at 28 needs to STOP EATING".

Could I get into trouble??

Even if you don't get in trouble legally (for possible liable or defamation), it's just a stupid thing to do.

If you saw someone's WiFi name was that the person who lives in your apartment is a "fill in the blank," you may laugh and shrug it off, but some people are known to come out with guns.

It's also asking someone to try to break into your network. Someone could possibly find you by using a sensitive sniffer and seeing where in the building your WiFi signal is strongest.

It's just plain stupid.

Not sure what country you are from, but in the U.S., your question would fall under states laws and FCC regulations. You are broadcasting on a unlicensed band for consumer use, but it is still regulated. Broadcasting any type of information, true or not, that could be used to identify a particular individual or group of individuals could cause you more trouble then a lawsuit over slander, hate crimes, harassment, etc. If the FCC got evolved, which any smart lawyer would surely do, you could receive a large federal fine. With the huge abuse of federal power in the executive branch and employees of the executive branch (FCC being one), you can be sure they would love to make an example of you.

Why not?

Why would there be an issue?

Ours is called "North Gunz, Bitches" because we had a pretend "gang" named that, that was really a "knife club", that really did not exist at all. We just felt like making some cool stencils and putting them on t-shirts:D

Living in a college town, some of the Wi-Fi names I’ve seen are hilarious. Some are pretty obscene (or at least, childish), but they’re absolutely the best.

Please post the most obscene thing you can imagine and target it at someone who's obviously unconcerned with the law. Then fill us in on how many beatings you get for advertising yourself as the neighborhood douche. Maybe increase a number at the end of your SSID for each time you get beaten or how many teeth you've lost. Fun times for all!

Hide your SSID - then it won't matter. You can set this as a setting right in the AP's config.

The OP said he/she lives in London (England). I don't think the FCC has much in the way of jurisdiction over here. :p

Call it what you like as your WIFI doesn't give your home address to your neighbours. In all what will you accomplish by targeting your neighbours? I just don't see the sense in doing it.

If you really feel like insulting or slandering your neighbours for no reason why not consider the name, 'My life is sad'?
