As the title says, not a big expert so I'm asking to make sure.

I have both installers in my Apps folder right now, if I install Yosemite but want to go back, can I then just open the Mavericks installer?

Also, any thoughts or concerns on Word and other Office apps and their compatibility with Yosemite?

Make a USB installer of Mavericks and Yosemite from the file in your apps folder. If you run the install file without making a usb installer or making a backup of the file in another location, you will lose the install file in the app folder, as it gets deleted after installation.

From using the beta and RC versions of Yosemite, the only way to go back is to do a clean install - i.e. create an install USB drive for Mavericks and overwrite everything.

I tested Office 2011 (Word, Excel) on a separate drive with Yosemite - no issues. Outlook has the same issues it had with Mavericks (i.e. can't import MBOX files).

Keep in mind that, if you chose to upgrade to iCloud Drive when you installed Yosemite, you can't undo this.

What issues are you having with Yosemite?

Appreciate the insight, I've found myself a step by step guide to the USB installer and I'll go that route.

No issues! I haven't installed it yet, I got caught on a late night reading all the doom-mongers about the new look etc. Got me a little concerned, especially after ios8 fiasco. Comfortable and happy using Mavericks, but look shiny new things I must see for myself
