I use Google Photos as my backup instead of iCloud and I want to keep it that way. However I recently ran into a problem whe clearing out old photos off the device that were backed up into Google Photos already.

Some of those photos were used for the wallpaper, for example. But when I’m just mass-selecting hundreds of photos no way I can keep track of something like that. As such after GBs of photos/videos, my lock screen and wallpaper went black.

Is there a way I can ensure some photos won’t get accidentally deleted from the device?

You could save some photos to the Files app if you want to keep them separate from the Photos app's library.

I don't know why your wallpaper went black though, I'm pretty sure you don't need a photo to be in your library for it to be your wallpaper.

Maybe because I was using photo shuffle from an album rather than a single photo? And the album went empty?

Which links back to your first point - I don't think I can shuffle a set number of photos outside of using the Photos Album feature, in which case I'll always have the problem?

Oh that would explain it. I guess there would be no way to do that unless you only have very few images to switch between and could just make each photo a separate lock screen.
