Thinking that iPad is marketed as a laptop alternative, can I install all the apps that I might have on a laptop eg/VLC or Perian, Cyberduck or does it follow the iPhone apps route and tied to the App Store?

If so I don't like that restriction, I guess you pay more for that control!

Nope. Unless you jailbreak it, you can only put apps on it via the App Store. VLC wouldn't work on the iPad anyway because of the codec restrictions.

The iPad is not marketed as a laptop alternative. It's a device that allows you to watch movies/tv, read ebooks, play games, use apps, and do Flash-less web browsing around the house and while you are on the go. VLC is a program, not an app, and I doubt an app will be made for it anytime in the future.
