No cards you can install will accelerate HD on a G5. Looks like you have a PCI-E G5. There are a few flashed cards you can buy on ebay... I think the best card for your machine was a ATI x1900.

If you plan on using OSX.

Nope, the drivers don't exist for it. No firmware either

No cards that work in a G5 with OSX at least will accelerate HD, most of them lack modern drivers as well.

The best you can do is a 7800 or a x1900.

These are still useful, but old machines.

If you plan to use Osx The best is the X1900gt 256mb
I have the 7800gtx and x1900 but the Ati is better compared with first in performances.
In any way MacOs X is stopped on 10.5.8 on QuadG5 for have some new porting and improved os the only way is have another partition with lubuntu.
I have both ;)
Plus a New video board gave more power to the machine.
Example:
i had a old P4 3.0 ghz and on it i put an 7750hd 2gb ddr3 with Pci->Pcie adaptor and i play on this machine with Battlefield 3

4xG5 is full 16x pcie machine expandable with 16gb of ram and thanks to RadeonHd improve really much it performances.

In any way for have a radeonhd working on lubuntu you will need a x1900gt in couple in the G5

for understand how much the GPU make the difference watch this video, this was my first experiment ... and this machine was really slow compared with the Quad G5 ;)

That's interesting! Have you tried the HD card with other ATI or Nvidia cards combined, like ATI 9650 or Nvidia 6600?

Yes i had ben tested.
I have only here X1900, nv6600 an nv7800 and one 4650hd
The 4650 work only in couple with X1900

The Tests:
Debian Wheezy 7.5 work great with nv7800gtx 512mb . i had full video acceleration and 3d but the system run there in 32bit and no audio.

Nv6600 work only in terminal no Xorg.
RadeonHD 44650 dont work at all like the X1900 too

Lubuntu
No Nv are working , and no X1900 alone
X1900 pcie slot 16x and RadeonHd 4650 pcie slot 8x
Everything is working audio thru hdmi too there are only wrong colors in 3d applications but one dev explain me this problem can be simple fixed in future..
the system run in full 64bit.

if i use the radeonHD in couple with an Nv card the Lubuntu not work at all.

Soon i will make another test on Debian wheezy with Nv 7800 in couple with a 2gb nvVideo Board.

The RadeonHd work only in couple with X1900 but probably will work in couple with all G5 pcie supported ati (macos side) video boards.

I dont know if on olds mac will be possible put a Agb video Boards in couple with a Pcie Video board on a Pcie->Pci adaptor ... but i think it is possibile .

Thank you for your informative reply. From your tests it seems that we could manage to run in Linux
1). An ATI PC card together with an ATI Mac card, or
2). An Nvidia PC card with an Nvidia Mac card.
If that could be true it would be a great news for those users who want to use Linux on PowerMacs!
For what I remember the PowerMac G5(late 2005) has a limitation of supporting 1GB Vram by all PCIE slots putting together in OSX.(I could be wrong) Don't know how much Vram could be supported in Linux. You can try 2GB card anyway, and report kindly back to us.

On linux there isnt Vram problems because the Ati drivers are make by Ati , there are online some Patches for 6xxx card for fix the colors in the glx/mesa 3d .
Virtually the drivers arent a problems because linux ppc is using the X86 firmware on the VideoBoards (uboot system) if the board works on a Pc will work on the PowerPc side too.
Im sorry for have only some video boards here for make tests.
In any way my tests on lubuntu user can found on ubuntu official forum
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2221421
Now i will test the last Wheezy on the Nv6600 and will report if the video board s will work there.

I confirm the last wheezy is working on the Nv 6600 and this board is more optimized compared with 7800gtx :) 3x faster :p
Will see in couple of an 2Gb video board if this distro will work too
I test the Last yabause the sega saturn emulator and it is 4x times more faster compared with the MacOSx version ... :)
