I have a five year old Powerbook G4, 15" Aluminum 1 gigahertz. My internal hard-drive failed and I'm replacing it myself using iFixit's guides. My question is: Can I take out (and leave out) the optical drive? I never use it and it adds a lot of weight to the computer. I guess I would just fasten the PRAM battery to the bottom of the case. Would this cause any problems when I reinstall the system software? Thanks in advance for any answers.

yup you most certainly can take it out. mine has been out for months! battery life gets maybe 10mins extra.
