I have Airport Utility version 6.3.6 and I have my main network and it seems to be visible to the world. I also have a guest network that I see I can click on a "Make Hidden" option. Is there any way to make the main network hidden?

from the help menu in airport utility, found by going to help, and searching for hidden

  1. Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

    Open AirPort Utility for me

  2. In the graphical overview, select the base station you want to configure, then click Edit. You may need to enter a password for the base station.

  3. Click Wireless, then click the Wireless Options button near the bottom of the pane.

  4. In the dialog that appears, select “Create hidden network.”

On the screen where I hit that Wireless options button you talk about in step 3, I currently have my main network name that everyone can see, which is the one I want to make hidden. How could I take this original first network out of the picture? Do I just need to delete its name and then re-create it as a hidden network like in step 4?

it will still have the same name, it's just stops broadcasting it's name, you don't delete anything.
just check the box.

on your devices that have already connected to it will still show the name in the wifi list, and connect to it as usual.
on you devices, if you "forget this network" then the name won't show up anymore.
of if a device has never connected to the network, the name won't appear in their list either.

Hiding your network really doesn't do much for security, scanning software that is easily accessed will show the name.

So If I wanted to see if it was working (being hidden) then I could just "forget" the network and then scan again and see if it shows up. Is that right?

Well, it actually seems to be working without forgetting because my network is gone, from sight that is.

I think that worked. Thanks.
