The Safari thumbnails in the TouchBar do kind of distract me in my productivity. Is there a way to remove them completely from the TouchBar (and keep the rest of the TouchBar in tact)?

Yes. Open Safari and in the menubar click View>Customize Touch Bar. Scroll down until your mouse leaves the screen and highlights the touchbar and drag the highlighted icons you want to remove up. It will be removed and you can use the on screen menu to put in whatever you want.
