Can i restore contacts from 3.1 to 4.0?

My mom is upgrading from 3g to my old 3gs.
Do i have to update the old 3g to 4.0 in order to restore?
 
You can make a backup of the old 3G by right clicking on the iPhone in the sidebar, then restore from the backup likewise (by right clicking on the sidebar).
