I'm trying to de-clutter my Mac (27", late 2009 now running Mavericks). I noticed that there is an installed extension called FUSE (OSXFuse). Can I (or should I) remove this?

I'm not sure why this is installed in my Mac. It may be related to an old USB external NTFS-formatted disk (WD Passport) that is no longer installed. That old external drive started to cause problems, so I replaced it with a new Mac OS Extended-formatted drive. The FUSE extension has probably been there since the Mac was running Snow Leopard years ago ... I can't think of a reason to have this extension now.

Can I remove the FUSE extension? Are there any common applications that need this?

1 good use for FUSE:

Mounting .vmdk's for direct access to a Virtual Machine's disk (when the VM is not running)

That's about all I use it for.
