I'm rather confused about what will happen with my @me.com email after transitioning to iCloud. Once I cancel my MobileMe subscription (or after June 30, 2012)... can I still use my @me.com email address? Or is that whole functionality gone?

Has anyone transitioned to iCloud and canceled their MobileMe subscription? If so, what happens with your @me.com email?

Well hopefully by then Apple will have their act together and allow us to transition our mobile me email addresses as Apple IDs and continue using it. Right now I find it insulting how they are treating those of us who had the audacity to PAY for Mobile Me.

If you cancel it your email address will be retired. Permanently.

Now I am rather confused, because I used the online chat with Apple's Express Lane and was told that the email would still work. But it certainly does not sound that way based on the support documents. I'm wondering if anyone has actually done this (transitioned to iCloud and then canceled their MobileMe subscription) and knows first-hand what happens next?

You don't need to cancel anything. When you migrate to iCloud your MobileMe mail is transferred and you continue to use the same address.

But I'd like to get a partial refund on MobileMe since I won't be using most of its features. All I want is the email... Do I keep that after canceling or do I need to find another email provider?

No it is NOT transferred. We end up with two Apple IDs and the .me email is only available on the ID from Mobile Me... which is not what most of us with this problem use for iTunes purchases.... and now syncing contacts, calendar, etc., too.

Your me.com address from Mobile Me is not accessible via iCloud. And if you try to access the email section at iCloud.com it will tell you you need to setup a .me account first. Same if you try to enable email in iCloud on an iOS device.

That is because the MobileMe Apple IDs are NOT merged with our existing Apple IDs.

So I have two Apple IDs: one for my purchases (a gmail email addy) and one for MobileME addy. Since my contacts, calendars, app and other purchases, etc., are under my Gmail iTunes ID I cannot use iCloud to look at my .me email.

I am not happy how this has been handled. At all.

Yes it is. This question was about @me.com email addresses, not AppleIDs.

Tinmania, yes, for most people with MobileMe, it is transferred. It sounds like you, unfortunately, made the mistake of transitioning to iCloud using your Gmail address and then trying to change your ID to your mobileme.com address. For those that transitioned to iCloud using their MobileMe me.com address, the me.com ID/email address transferred nicely to iCloud.

    ----------

And by the way Tinmania, your MobileME ID/email address IS an Apple ID as well.

I know exactly what happened and I am far from the only one affected. And the mm to iCloud move feature only allows you to use a mm address so there is no way to do it with any other account--nor would there be anything to "move" as mm had all the PIM data.

I have to use my gmail iTunes ID as that is where I have made every iTunes purchase and it is the Apple ID I have had for years, use with my Apple TVs and other iOS device, etc. Before there even was Mobile Me I had that ID.

When I purchased Mobile Me, unbeknownst to me--and unwanted--a new Apple ID was created using my mm email. I never logged into iTunes with that ID, only to mm. But because I happened to sign up for that service I am prohibited from using that email address with iCloud as as it will not allow it.

So my me.com email was transferred... but I can't use it without having two iCloud accounts setup on every device.

What I want is very simple. I want ONE iTunes account. Instead, I have to put up with two and it is getting to be a PITA.

What I had wanted to do was start using my me.com address, which up to now was/is only a repository for forwarded gmail email. But unless I can do it with one iTunes ID it's not truly "moved" or "merged." More like a mess.

That said I will say I ASSumed the OP was not using the mm email address as primary Apple ID. If he or she is then it transfers fine.

Well, I have the exact same situation as you and it was not a PITA. I transferred my mm ID to iCloud and that is my me.com email address. Then I used the gmail iTunes ID with my purchases and plugged it into the store setting on each of my iDevices and then authorized my computer for both IDs and, voila, works like a charm as if I had just one ID. And then I got a pro-rated refund on my unused MobileMe subscription. I think yoU ASSumed wrong concerning the OP.

Thank you for the useful responses, I feel much more comfortable now about canceling my MobileMe subscription.

And to clear things up in regards to Tinmania's posts... that was not situation... I have only one Apple ID, which is the same as my MobileMe ID.

I know I assumed wrong about the OP... that is why I wrote what I wrote.

However, to be "OK" with two Apple IDs might be OK by you but not by me. I do not want one ID for purchases and one for iCloud. A cursory web search will show I am far from alone in not wanting this. I'd be perfectly happy to use my me.com addy as my main iTunes ID--but on the same account that is currently set to gmail.

It's not like email address is part of the primary key. Your Apple ID has a an account number/identifier for that like any good database would. I have changed the email associated with my Apple ID 4 or 5 times throughout the years--it has no affect on the account itself. All I want to do is change it now to my me.com addy and let the other iTunes ID go away. I can't make my me.com Apple ID be primary as too many purchases are tied to it--including iTunes match.

I don't need to do a cursory search, I'm well aware of the Apple ID merging problem, it has been an issue for years and now thousands of people are unnecessarily confused and irritated. I want my IDs to merge as well, it is so nonsensical. The fact remains that you would have been far better off if you had transferred your MobileMe account to iCloud and then plugged in your gmail ID into the Store Setting on your iDevices and AppleTV. This way, it not only emulates 1 ID, it also keeps your purchases with your gmail account ID and also lets you use the me.com email address you want. Then, when Apple merges IDs, if they ever do, everything will go smoothly. The way you have it now, you were forced to make a new me.com address that you don't need and you can't use the me.com address you want to use for email in iCloud and you can't get your MobileMe pro-rated refund now without giving up your me.com email address and you have to cross your fingers that they will indeed merge accounts. You are one of many that made this mistake and Apple is solely at fault for a)not allowing ID merging and b)not adequately publicizing how each person should move to iCloud in their various multiple ID situations. I'm not trying to insult you here so please don't take offense, I almost did the same thing as you, just pointing it out so others have clarity, which is really what Apple should be doing.

Completely agree, I have two Apple IDs now and it sucks. Also since my @me email was registered and verified to my first pre-MobileMe Apple ID this gets confusing. Now I can't register an email for my new Apple ID. This is such a joke.

    basically

basically, at this point there is no way to cancel a mobileme @me.com account. It is now simply free and will continue to be there. Yes, you could probably contact them and say, delete, kill, purge, whatever, but all mobileme accounts will "expire" in 2012 and continue as iCloud accounts.

I understand what you are saying... and agree.

In my case, I did not have to worry about a refund as my mm was set to expire in early September. So I didn't have to renew as it was already extended to June, 2012.

Also, I have not actually created another .me email address on my original iTunes ID in the hopes that if they ever do allow merging I might need that "available" for my existing .me address. Probably wishful thinking but what the heck.

Oh, I also didn't want to use my .me iTunes ID as my primary iCloud syncing ID as I thought it might affect iTunes Match... but now that things are becoming a little clearer I believe it won't.

But I also am a registered developer and that was done using my original Apple ID. So there is that too.

Oh well, it's working now, although I end up with two iCloud accounts on each mac and iOS device if I want to sync notes or access my me.com email.
