where I live there are a couple of freebie hotspots. They don't need an access key to connect, but they do need a login to use the internet. My phone often connects to them and then when I try to use the net, I get the constant spinning icon and then I remember what's happened and have to go into settings and 'forget this network' and connect to my home network.

Is there a way I can prevent it from automatically connecting to networks that I don't want it to?

You would have to hit "Forget this network" or turn wifi off. If you forget the network it won't be a "known network" therefore it will ask you if you want to join it.
