Can I Un-jailbreak but still keep OS 4.0.1?

I appologize if this is in another thread or sticky, I couldn't find an exact answer.

I have early model iPhone 4 OS 4.0.1 on modem firmware 01.59.00 that I jailbroke on jailbreakme.com last summer. I'd like to unjailbreak but still be able to re-jailbreak and unlock again later, if possible I'd like to keep OS 4.0.1 or some other easy broken OS. I have my SSH files from 4.0 and 4.0.1 saved.

I know I can restore in iTunes to unjailbreak, but won't that take me to the latest OS (which I assume isn't as easily jailbroken/unlocked).

What should I do?

Actually the latest os 4.2.1 is very easy to jailbreak with greenpois0n and only slightly less easier with pwnagetool.

I don't understand why you want to unjailbreak if you are still interested in jailbreaking again in the future.

This is true. PwnageTool is out and updated now so you would be able to upgrade to 4.2.1 and maintain your 1.59.00 unlockable baseband.
 
My reason for unjailbreaking may sound a little weird to someone people. I'm a Christian and I don't want to look at porn, I have a porn filter app on my iPhone, but I can get around it using Cydia if I wanted to. I still want to be able to unlock so I can get a higher resale or switch to tMobile in the future maybe.

I do have my SHSHs saved. So I can use those to restore, how exactly?

Is 4.2.1 the newest? Can I use pawnage to upgrade to 4.2.1 but still stay vanilla (non-jailbroken)?

What course would you recommend? Does 4.2.1 add anything good v 4.0.1?

Hey Im a Christian also but I love porn:D
So you basicly want to keep yourself protected from watching porn?
You can use pwnage to maintain your bb while upgrading to 4.2.1 but it will be a JB ipsw including Cydia.
Or you can restore to stock 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 using TU in order to keep your unlockable baseband.

Does the porn filter require the phone being jailbroken, because I don't think I've heard of any stock capabilities of the iPhone that would stop this?

And it sounds like you need to reevaluate yourself a bit if to remove the temptation of porn you have to actually block yourself from it.. I can understand a parent wanting to block a kid, but needing to block yourself? I'm just saying..
 
Applejuiced I won't even quote your comment. Your statement is a black eye to Christians who truly practice their faith. I think that's the nicest way I can put that without sounding judgemental.

Valkeriefire as far as your statement, unjailbroken iPhones have just as much access. Safari is a browser, and there are still those kinds of sites out there.

There are many "flavors" of Christianity with widely varying beliefs. That's all I'm going to say about that because this will rapidly degenerate into the wasteland...
 
The two terms are mutually exclusive. Being a Christian and having an addiction is one thing. Blatantly stating you love this addiction, that's something far different. I'm not saying someone with an addiction (who is hopefully seeking help for it) can't be a Christian. But that original post is a horrible statement. That smiley face certainly doesn't help either.

I think that smiley face was intended to indicate that it is a joke, not to be taken as seriously as you are taking it.

That said, I happen to think that being Christian and loving porn doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. As another poster already said, there are so many flavors of Christianity, your definition of being Christian isn't necessarily the same as another person's.
 
If your SHSH blobs are saved, as you have said they are, you should easily be able to restore from an ISPW file by pressing Restore while holding down Shift (Option on a Mac), and selecting the appropriate firmware file, downloaded from here.

Wow as a Athiest I find this thread interesting. Just based on what I read by a couple people. I dare to guess what there narrow minded views would be. In reality people can only protect themselves so much from bad influences such as porn. Self control is in your hands. Also if you look the app store you might need to prevent acces to there as well. lots of temptation in the app store as well.

First of thanks everyone who has helped. Sounds like I need to use Tiny Umbrella and my SHSHs to revert back to 4.0.1. This is the only way to be unjailbroken and keep my baseband.

Regarding Christianity and porn... Jesus said "if your left hand causes you to sin, cut it off". Now he isn't arguing for self-mutilation but he does mean we should take any step necessary to avoid sin. Pornography is in my opinion an addiction. If you struggle with any form of addiction you don't hang around it (or allow it on your smart phone). Smoker trying to quit shouldn't hang out with friends who smoke, alcholics shouldn't hang out in bars etc etc. Allthough opinions here differ I think porn is a sin from a biblical perspective. God intended sex to be between a husband and wife, and watching people who clearly are not married have sex does not honor God.

The iPhone doesn't have a filter per se, but there is an app called X3watch that pretty much does it if you disable safari and the App Store using the restrictions in general settings. This is in my opinion a failing in the iOS. Android has better solutions.

You can also use Open DNS and have filtering on your home's internet. I like this approach because any device on my home internet is automatically covered.

That is the solution I use. The only place where porn is a temptation is at home.

There's too many useful features with being jailbroken to give up.

I'd do that but I get wifi access at multiple places where I don't have access to the router (plus my co-workers would wonder why they can't get to certain sites and productivity would increase).
 
This thread is amazing.

To Valkeriefire... are you familiar with the process of editing your hosts file to redirect traffic from one web address to another? That's the principle behind SHSH saving and restoring to older iPhone firmwares. As long as your hosts file is redirecting traffic from gs.apple.com to 74.208.10.249 (or your own local TinyUmbrella server) you can update in iTunes and your baseband won't be touched. This is because the Apple servers need to sign off on all iPhone 4 baseband modifications.

You will get an error message when iTunes fails to modify the baseband saying that the iPhone 4 needs to be restored. When you get this message just use Tiny Umbrella to exit recovery mode and you'll be good to go.
 
You're saying you're worried you can get around any porn filter if the device is jailbroken so you are taking the necessary precautions (un-jailbreaking) to try and prevent yourself from accessing porn... but aren't you concerned that you'll just jailbreak to get around the filter? If you can't stop yourself from circumventing the filter, how are you going to stop yourself from re-jailbreaking? Honest question.

yea this whole thread is insane, honestly if its against your religion to watch porn..simply dont look at it??? problem solved, otherwise you have a SERIOUS problem

That's pretty disrespectful to the OP. Would you say to an alcoholic, "Just don't drink?" It's not so easy, especially with how simple it is to access porn on the internet.

weird I know alcoholics that still enjoy going to the bar. they just know they can't drink there. they are also smart enough to realize that it's impossible to avoid alcohol. In the long run it's takes a strong will and discipline.

shut up, your protecting a porn fiend first of all, second of all there is no way an alcoholic could 'protect' himself/herself from buying booze unless they had a fake id for being underage. if you feel im 'disrespectful' for criticizing a porn addict then so be it.

And trust me there's many many other Christians that watch porn. I know it's really hard to believe:D
