Eventually my 24" 2.8ghz 2GB ram Imac will need updating, in a few years but saving me buying a new one when that time comes, will I be able to updated the graphics/video cards and the motherboard?

    HDD and RAM are it.

Both the CPU and GPU are part of the motherboard.

A few years? Try five or more. This isn't a PC. If you bought it for gaming, you bought the wrong machine. If you bought it for normal use, you'll get five years easy.

Nope didn't buy it for gaming I just do the occasional cod 4 and that but I know games in the future will be out so I will update it if I need to, yeah for normal use mostly, so does that mean I can do all the things I want?

5 years? I'm thinking about getting an iMac after the late 2008/early 2009 speedbump. My main concern is the screen, I can see this thing dying on me a lot sooner than the 5 year mark. Everywhere I look I see people having problems with the screen, and to me that has always been the obvious weak point of an iMac, you can't just replace the screen that easily should it fail outside of 3 years after purchase.

It's not so much the lack of expandability that has me worried about macs. It's the quality of the components.

P.S. writing this on an 9 year old XP grey box :p

What? Well I've not had ANY problems with my screen yet. No problems with the imac so far, so don't worry about it!

Unless I am confused (happens far too often :() is seems by this question if you are asking again about updating the video/motherboard down the line-- and I would just confirm what Tallest Skil indicated- you can update the HD and the RAM but that will be it. You will not find updated/upgraded motherboards (or the video that is part of the motherboard) as you might in the PC side of the universe.

Just to confirm what everyone else is saying - you can upgrade the RAM and the HDD (the latter with difficulty on the white iMacs - you need to remove the screen), but everything else is soldered together. If you wanted upgradability, the iMac wasn't for you.
