Does anyone know if the new iMac's internal hard disk can be user-upgraded?

    Specifically the 24" 3.06 model.

I have an iMac G5 which is easy to swap out, but I seem to remember with the following model you couldn't.

    Cheers.

It's technically possible... if you're willing to do some major, major surgery.

I've replaced hard drives on pretty much every mac model over the last 7-8 years. The white 20" iMac (second case version) was the most difficult by far. The new aluminum models adds to the difficulty of that one by forcing the user to remove the glass screen (most guides I've seen involve using a suction cup device). I'm not willing to try it, and I'm willing to take apart almost anything.

There are sites that show you how to take apart the new Alum iMac...some have taken them apart and shown the results on MacRumors. I would suggest before you do any major surgery you check the videos out. Extremely hard to do, but can be done. (If you damage anything your warranty is void however.)

Make life easy and just buy an external HD and be done with it.

Ah, that sounds like a bit of a (risky) nightmare, so I'll give it a miss.

My dilemma is whether to pick up the 500GB model today, or wait a week for the 1TB option.

    Thanks for the info. :)
