Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to use a Power Mac G5 (quad, liquid cooled) while it is placed on its side with the monitor on top? This is because it is my secondary computer and I don't use it very often, so I put it on the floor of my room with a spare monitor (my main computer is on my desk, there is no space for 2 computers on it)

This takes up a relatively large amount of space with the G5 and monitor next to it, so I was wondering if the G5 would get damaged if used as I described above??

Thanks ;)

Yes you can do that. I would recommend using it door down to minimize potential leaks damaging the system and reduce heat.

Yes of course. But if you are placing it on a hard surface then the case might get scratched if pushed around, so I'd recommend putting some rubber bumpers or footies on the side before putting it down. It also keeps the case clean.

Oh ok thanks! I thought it might be something like the Xbox One where it won't work when placed the wrong way round. (because of the liquid cooling and stuff)
Also, I'll use it door down but surely it will work better door up because heat rises? (door up = processor etc. on bottom) Also it would make it easier to open, I wouldn't have to turn around the machine. But if leaving it door up increases the chances or leakage, I'll leave it door down!

Do not ever run a G5 with the door open for more than a few minutes. The hottest part of the G5 is on the logicboard opposite of the door side. If that part is down, the desk or floor will trap heat. Having it door down will allow the very hot part to cool itself more.

Ok thanks, I understand what you're saying. Guess I'll place it as you described!

Thanks

Ok guys, I've done it and it seems to be working fine! Optical drive also works perfectly sideways!
Also stuck a bunch of post-it notes (about 1/2 cm thickness) on each corner of the G5 so that it doesn't actually touch the floor and get scratched.

The guy I bought my last bunch of beige Macs from last week related a funny story to me.

He said that he'd loaned out a G5 tower to a friend, and the friend couldn't get the optical drive to work. He said he'd come out and look at it, but it would be a few days.

The friend called him back a few days later, and said that he'd fixed the problem. It seems as though he'd set the G5 up upside-down  . Of course, it's no big surprise that the optical drive didn't work.

Wooow, that is some great banter there.

How do you control that though? There's no place for a mouse.

Haha I know, I either move everything back and use the mouse in front of the keyboard, or put the mouse next to the G5 on the floor with a mouse mat. Not ideal but oh well. :p

Don't worry, I have placed it door down, even though it will be an inconvenience when opening up the machine!

I would think that setup would be very uncomfortable to use. You'd probably never use that G5 :/
I think it would be better if you mount it on a wall or mount it somewhere else. And perhaps use it as a server (though G5s are electricitiholics and fart out a lot of heat so you may not want it running a lot).

Or you can put it under or next to your desk; it doesn't have to be on the desk. Or do you not have space for two monitors?

I could, but right now I have my 15' retina MBP on my desk and nothing else. Gives you a lot of space to put books and stuff and makes it way less cluttered. I could go back to how I used to (laptop + monitor on desk) but idk...

I kinda like my desk the way it's set up now, because when I want to get stuff done I can do so quickly and easily on the MPB. I don't use the G5 for any productive work because of the outdated apps, instead I mess around with the G5 as a hobby. I'm pretty sure most people on this forum who have an Intel Mac do the same!

As for running it as a server, well I don't really understand what having a server will do to help me? What are PPC servers used for anyways? I don't have a real need for it if I'm going to be honest :p

By the way, thanks for your help. :D

You could use the G5 as a file server so you can access your files wherever you are at home. You can even set it up so you can access it anywhere on the planet where there is internet access.
