So, regular USB charger is not strong enough to charge ipad. How about the other way around? Would it damage iphone? If so, I'm going to have to carry two when I'm on travel...

    Ask Apple
Your experience may vary, but from mine I can tell you that a 5W/1A charger, like the one that came with your iPhone, will charge the iPad. For me, it does it at ~10% - 12% per hour when the unit has its screen off or is in sleep mode.

3 earth minutes from your location....
Yes you can use the iPad charger to charge the iPhone. You can even use the smaller USB charger as well except that it will take a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time to charge it.

Use the iPad charger for everything and you will be fine.

My only concern with using a more high powered charger than what was supplied is that the battery won't last as long. If you look at NiMH batteries and the better chargers, they allow you to charge anywhere from 200mAH and up. The higher the charge, the faster it charges, but the battery won't last as long. This concept probably applies to Li batteries as well.
