My current set up is a 1gb stick of 5300 and a 2gb stick of 6400.

I know it is supposed to only take 5300, but since one of the sticks is 6400 will it take both being 6400 or does at least one stick have to be 5300?

In theory, the Mac should automatically adjust the new stick's speed to match the slower one. In practice, this doesn't always happen, as the first couple generations of MacBook Pro were very picky about RAM. All you can do is try and hope for the best.
