Yes, I did that for years. I had a Comcast cable modem, Window work laptop (boy am I glad that piece of crap is history) and several Macs. For me I always like the Apple Airport Extreme, they just work are super simple to set up and never ever fail.

For internet access just about any router will do.

Not knowing the other requirements of your setup I couldn't make a recommendation.
