Coming from a Windows background, one of my main concerns with computing is having a virus scanner. I haven't seen a virus scanner in the app store, so is this one more thing I don't have to think about with iPad (even a jailbreak (?) iPad) and other Apple products?

actually its true there are iphone virus made. so in the future ipad viruses will be created.

Don't believe everything you read...

The previous commentary remark...." of, coarse.." was too brief...so I did a bit more research and here is what I found.....

In theory they can only run code that Apple authorizes, so in general, no they can't because Apple would never authorize a virus.

However, there are always bugs in software including the iPhone's iOS and in the past it has been possible for hacker to create very special web-sites and even SMS messages that exploit these bugs and get around the access controls and allow the hacker to run any code including viruses. However, these holes are normally plugged quickly after being found.

Some people disable these controls deliberately by "jail-breaking" their phone. These phone's are much more vulnerable to viruses, and simple viruses that attack jail-broken phones have been seen in the wild, but this isn't something for normal users to worry about.

So in general, it is unlikely at this time, and although this kind of protection is probably at least as good as a virus scanner - if not better - there is always a chance of a big hole being found in iOS and somebody exploiting it.

Back in 4.3.3 there was a glitch with pdf's in safari. If you opened an infected one they could theoretically jailbreak your device right there without your consent. But to my belief that has been fixed.

Apple does a pretty good job preventing virus entry or security breaches. While any system is susceptible to worms or viruses that target specific information, breaking into iOS is fairly tough due to its UNIX core and also due to the multiple layers of protection to the device that's built into the OS. It's going to be very unlikely for you to get a worm or virus in your iOS device to the point where, unless you are managing LARGE amount of assets via your iPad, and you're an international target for espionage, you're probably not going to get a worm or virus. You would have a better chance winning the lottery.

yes you can

You can get a virus by puttin corrupt music, films, apps etc. Cause I hav done this I added a load of music from untrusted torrent files. I put them on my ipod and about 1-1 1/2 wks later my ipod went white and pink and crashed completely it wouldn't turn on no matter what I did, I tried everythin from puttin in DFU mode to chargin nothin. Also jailbreakin can hav a risk aswell and I am not goin to jailbreak anymore either cause it messed up my ipod and the battery drains so much. I was lucky I had a replacement ipod for free :D dont want to risk it again though! If u want to download safe music I'd recommend buyin from itunes or use these websites: beemp3, skullmp3, youtube-mp3.org.

If you couldn't get your iPad working again even with DFU mode, then it had a hardware problem, totally unrelated to any apps or other files you put on your iPad. It's just a coincidence this happened after you put your torrented files onto your iPad.
