I know the LG ultra fine display connects to MacBook and displays it when using a USB-C to USB-C cable.

I’m guessing that the LG ultrafine monitor can also connect to iPad Pro with the same type of cable.

im wondering if the cable (photo attached) will allow the $329 iPad or iPhone X to display onto the LG ultra fine display.

I get the feeling that this one of those things where it should work but probably wouldn’t.

You would need HDMI input on the display to connect an iPhone or an iPad which does not include USB-C. This cable will not do what you want.

so a lightning to usb-c would only charge the iPad or iPhone?

I’m attaching another photo of a third party dongle; would this work to get the image/movie from my iPhone and iPad onto a monitor? I’m guessing the hdmi would then need a usb-c adapter in order to work with the LG ultrafine monitor.

Don't buy 3rd party, it has delay issues

There is no straightforward way to convert HDMI output to a USB-C input.
The Lightning to USB-C cable is for charging or syncing your device to a computer that has USB-C.

it seems like third party cables are only what’s available. That or the Apple Store app hides these dongles pretty well.

There is no way without a string of boxes.

The Ultrafine 4K, like most USB-C monitors, uses a DisplayPort video input, i.e. it uses DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

There is no DisplayPort output on the iPhone. You would need iPhone to HDMI, an active HDMI to DisplayPort converter, and a DisplayPort to USB-C output adapter.
