I've been considering getting an iPhone 3GS in the near future. I already have an iPod Touch and I love it so much I figure why not just get an iPhone have combine two devices I always have with me into one.

I haven't used an iPhone enough to play with the settings, but is there a way to disable the phone functionality in an iPhone? The reason I ask is this: If I have an iPhone, I don't much see the reason to keep my iPod. I could sell it and it will help cover the cost of my new phone. My issue is I do quite a bit of hiking and camping, usually in areas with no service. What I don't want to happen is to use my iPhone as my music player in the woods, all the while it is searching for signal and draining the battery. I am actually surprised how quickly a phone will use its battery power up when it can't find service, I know the Nokia I have now has great battery life, yet it will go dead overnight if I camp out in a service-less area and forget to turn it off.

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the iPhone as a phone in such instances?
