Can iTunes store albumart in the mp3 file?

As a MAC newbie I have a simple question:

Can iTunes store the albumart (an all other metadata for that matter) directly in the mp3 file? Do I need to do something special to make that happen?

Yes it can. Just drag it into the Artwork section under Get Info (or the art panel in the bottom-left if you have it turned on).

There is a script that will embed the artwork of the selected songs in iTunes to the file.
