*Theory*, I'm not for a second suggesting this is a practical solution.
You can insert 'HTML' snippets. The example they cite Google Gadgets, where said HTML is a script tag.
So you could insert your own script tag and point it to your own javascript which does a xhr to your own server side script (php/MySQL) and then updates the page.
