Can mac and pc communicate without router?

My friends g/f just got a macbook and he wants to know if he can transfer some of his files on his pc to her macbook without having a router or an active wireless internet connection.

Also, if he has to do it with ethernet, how does he do it? Ive yet to try cabled networking with my mac. Should her mac find his pc automatically if cabled?

The Mac should automatically adjust to crossover mode if you plug a normal Etherhet cable between the 2 machines. If it doesn't you can get a crossover Ethernet cable at any computer store, which will allow 2 machine to connect w/out a router or hub.
