Depends

If you are doing professional video editing and processing photos from you 40+ megapixel medium format camera, I'd guess probably not. if you do a bit of light video editing and process photos from your consumer/prosumer (up to most current full frame cameras) DSLR, then I think the Air should be fine for that and just about that and everything else.

No ... and I own one of each.

My 15" i7 MBP is wickedly fast, especially for work I do in InDesign and other CS5 apps. And I have the 500GB HDD about 3/4 full.

My 11" MBA, on the other hand, is my "go-with" computer. I loathe - even dread - travel with the MBP. I bought the MBA for portability, and I'm content to let my MBP do the heavy lifting.

Until a super-sized MBA comes along (and I'm sure it will, eventually) I'll keep both. They are very different but equally purposeful machines.

can/will new macbook air replace your macbook pro?

The bottom line is that it depends on your use case.

Do you mainly listen to music, browse the web, do spreadsheets/wordprocessing etc, some photoshop? Then the MBA can easily replace the MBP, -it will even be faster than it for everyday use due to the SSD.

But the MBP shines when you need a ton of storage or are doing processor intensive tasks. Every person is going to be different, but for most people, the MBA will just seem like a faster MBP. (Talking about 13" vs 13" models here).

i'm going to give it a try. i've got the mba 2gb coming in a couple of days. i doubt it will be very impressive compared to my mbp 8gb, but i'll give it a try. my workflow has changed a lot over the last few months, so it's possible. amazingly, i am actually getting most of my work done on the ipad these days. i know it sounds unimpressive, but if you are a writer/researcher, you'd be surprised how far the ipad can go.

Uh...I'd spring the extra buck for the 4GB RAM version. Really, it's so cheap and it has the most impact on your present and future performance. It's kind of a no brainer....

For me the answer is no it can't and won't. My MBP is a 17" with 8GB of RAM and a 750GB 7200 rpm HDD. The MBA will never have as much RAM, disk space or screen space as the MBP. That said, I love my MBA. But it is more like a car vs an SVU. The MBA compliments the MBP rather than replaces it.

no choice in the matter. this is the one amazon is marking down. amazon isn't marking that one down as much. so, i go with what they got. we'll see. i might be ok with it. if not, i'm thrilled with the mbp, and i don't mind keeping it.

My iTunes library is 222 GB. My Aperture library is 19 GB. So no, the MBA won't be replacing my MBP. Even my MBP's 500 GB HD is starting to seem tight! I'm surprised more people don't have this problem. And don't say "external hard drive" because I don't want to attach an external every time I load iTunes

External hard drive :)

Seriously. I've got several terabytes of data. Short of buying a tower computer, it'll never fit. I stopped wasting hd space with iTunes a long time ago on my Mbp. I load in what I need and have things on the cloud. The external usually stays at home, and just gets used to load files in for the next day as necessary.

The problem is that I have an Apple TV and like to have all my media available at once. Using a media hub or NAS seems a bit too complicated (I already have a Time Capsule but understand that it isn't really meant to be used that way).

The ideal solution would be to have an iMac with a huge HD that's always on, and a MacBook Air or iPad for when I'm on the go. I might look into this solution in the next couple of years when I sell my MBP. The question then will be - what's best for mobility. Air or iPad?
